Back to Basics

For a while now I've been thinking about dedicating one post a week to writing about... writing (syntax, grammar, spelling, punctuation, common mistakes, the possibilities!). First of all, let me just admit that I'm not an expert on fashion and I don't really follow trends, so I know there are many bloggers who do this styling thing better than I ever could. I do, however, have a writing degree (dare I say it? for the birds) that I'd like to put to good use! Would anyone be interested? I promise to make my "advice" fun, at times funny, and not at all pedantic. If you've always been unsure about subjects vs. objects and plurals vs. possessives, then you've clicked on the right blog.

To make your decision easier, I put together some bird photographs taken by yours truly in bird-friendly Vancouver. A "circle of life," if you will. Because nothing says Strunk and White like avian aesthetics.

I follow GrammarMonkeys on Twitter and always find their Tweets about hyphens and common grammatical errors to be really helpful - I say go for it!

I'm all for this idea! I love words and writing. You sometimes mention little tidbits in your fashion pots so while I love the idea of dedicated grammar/word posts I think you could also add more of those gems to the fashion too!

ps. The next dish I make will contain no diary!! ;)

As someone with not one, but two degrees "for the birds," I say why not? :) It'll make for an interesting read.

I've explained plurals versus possessives to my co-worker many times. I've tried to explain lay and lie, bring and take, affect and effect, etc. I'm often surprised by how many adults don't know the simplest of grammar rules. I have a degree in Communications (not Editorial Journalism though), so think I have a pretty good grasp of spelling and grammar. But, having worked as a copywriter I had an Editor who allowed us to start sentences with "But" and "And" because we wrote short copy.

So, enough about me. I think this would be a great feature for a logophile! Teach us your ways, oh wise well-written one. Or is it well written without the hyphen? I have my Strunk & White somewhere collecting dust.

Have a fab weekend. Sorry for the essay as usual.

I would love a little grammar lesson with a side of funny. I've realized since starting a blog that aside from knowing the difference between their/there/they're I'm pretty clueless when it come to grammar. My worst offense is that I always want to end a sentence in is/there/some other word I know can't be correct.

That picture of the seagull is amazing.

I say write about things you love. So if you are passionate about writing, write about writing! I think it would be great to have some tips - there are a lot of bloggers who could learn a thing or two. I'm sure I'm one of them!

YES YES YES to a style blogger with a grammar feature!! I think this could be an awesome niche for you, and I'm thrilled that you're finding a way to incorporate your degree into your blog.

I come to your blog as much for the great writing as I do for the great style.

K I'm late to the party but PLEASE, please go for it! And abandon it if you get tired of it, whatevs. But I would eat this up. I can write alright when I have to but I have NO IDEA what all the actual rules are or what the specific constructions are called or anything. Would be fun and helpful coming from your voice. :)
